Frequently Asked Questions

Morse code is a communication system that encodes letters and numbers as sequences of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). Originally transmitted via telegraph and radio, each letter has a unique dot-dash pattern, A is .-, B is -..., S is ..., O is ---. Our translator maps every character to its ITU standard Morse pattern in real time: type text and the Morse code appears instantly; type dots and dashes and the decoded text appears simultaneously. Words are separated by / in the Morse output, matching international convention.

Type or paste your Morse code into the Morse Code field using dots (.), dashes (-), spaces between letters, and / between words. The translated text appears instantly in the Standard Text field above. For example, ... --- ... decodes to SOS. If you're decoding audio Morse code, listen for the short beeps (dots) and long beeps (dashes), write them out in the Morse field, and the translator converts them immediately. You can also click the play button on a text translation to hear how standard Morse code sounds.

SOS in Morse code is ... --- ... — three dots, three dashes, three dots chosen specifically because it's the simplest, most recognizable pattern in Morse code, easy to tap or signal even under extreme stress. It was adopted as the international distress signal in 1908 and has no fixed meaning as an acronym; the letters were chosen purely for the signal's unmistakable rhythm. SOS can be sent by radio, flashing light, tapping, or any other signaling method making it the universal emergency call across languages. Type SOS into our translator to hear exactly what it sounds like.

Type any text into the Standard Text field and the Morse code appears automatically. Then click the Play button to hear it transmitted as audio, a 600Hz sine wave beeper plays dots and dashes at the correct ITU timing ratios: dots are one unit, dashes are three units, gaps between symbols are one unit, gaps between letters are three units, and gaps between words are seven units. This is the authentic International Morse Code timing used by radio operators. The audio runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API, no downloads or plugins required.

Despite being over 180 years old, Morse code remains actively used in several fields. Amateur (ham) radio operators still use Morse code (CW) for long-distance communication, especially when voice transmission is difficult. Aviation beacons still broadcast station identifiers in Morse code. Military and emergency services include Morse in survival training. Accessibility technology uses Morse as an input method for people with motor disabilities. Beyond practical use, Morse appears constantly in escape rooms, puzzle games, geocaching, film and TV plot devices, and cipher challenges. Our translator handles all of these use cases instantly.
